How did you attract your audience?

To attract my audience I decided to try and use text, colour and imagery that would interest my targeted age group of 15-25. I decided on a grungy type of font that also featured shapes within its lettering, I felt that this would create an interesting effect and attract my audience's attention, the reason for this comes down to certain subcultures and their tastes and styles. For example this type of magazine would appeal to the more 'rock' orientated subculture such as emo's rather than say, the indie subculture as a more stylistic and arty style magazine may suit them more. I also decided to feature a large amount of exclamation marks in my magazine as this shows the audience what is being featured in my magazine is of a large amount of importance, the majority of these exclamation marks are featured on my front cover and contents page. This type of punctuation and text is representative of text messages and the historic excitement of Twitter and other social media outlets. On my front cover I have also included some “big name bands” which shows that my magazine is also featuring non-punk bands and also featuring popular bands that may be considered to be very successful. Also I have included two other captions reading: "free rising

For my contents page I decided to feature a number of bands and what they have been doing. This then draws from Graeme Burtons theory of 'envy and emulation' as the bands themselves have been generating excitement for young music fans, gaining success and generally having a great time, thus making the target audience 'envy' them for this reason and by buying the magazine they can see what they have done and how and try to emulate this themselves. My magazine also features a 'rising stars' poster special which is detailed in the contents page, this focus on rising stars shows my focus of appealing to certain subcultures such as emo's and punks who generally take an interest in new bands who are gaining popularity rather than the 'big' mainstream artists who dominate the charts. To the left hand side of my contents page I have featured a note from the editor which is typical of a lot of magazines including Kerrang!. Once again, this makes the magazine feel more personal and therefore my audience may feel more comfortable in reading my magazine, a technique enhanced by the last words of this note which read "have a great week". I have also written bold headings over what is featured in my magazine and also listed a number of different bands and written a short description under each heading, this would encourage my readers to turn to these pages and read on about what is being featured within my magazine.stars poster" and "the UK's biggest gig guide.” These two captions grab the attention of my audience, but a more personal touch is the gig guide to which bands are playing where. This would likely influence my readers to decide to go see these bands and therefore may read my magazines gig guide again if they enjoy the band they go to see. I have chosen to use a large amount of slang language as I feel that this would relate to my target audience of teens, and Unsound’s informal language type therefore does not intimidate or act superior over its target audience.

For my feature article I chose to make it look quite gritty and therefore used a texture of a sheet of lined paper in the background and used a splatter and smoke brush to imprint what looks like bloodstains onto the background of the page This connotes a violent and gritty looking background to my feature article which shows which type of genre the band being featured belong to. I also chose to use a gritty font for the title of the band to further show the genre that the band belongs to. For the pictures I chose to use some dark but humorous pictures to show that the band is also a light hearted type of band which would allow my readers to connect with the band. For example one of my images is taken in a gritty location with the vibrancy of the image toned right down however the band member is hanging upside down with a large smile showing that the image is gritty and yet humorous. However I have also featured quotations that are featured within the questions I wrote that the band answered. These quotations are enlarged on the page and look very bold and are also in a gritty font type to evoke the rebellious attitude of Sirens. The quotations themselves read "It's an aggressive bombshell" and "I needed seven stitches" and they intentionally show that the band are aggressive and violent on the surface, before the interview clearly conveys they have a humorous side as it features a number of jokes made about each band member.
