Overall the main target audience for my magazine is males aged between 18-25. I was aware my magazine could not be considered exclusively as a male magazine as grunge/punk music is not really gender specific and therefore females may also read my magazine. In order to figure out the requirements, I researched a variety of real-life magazine.
By looking at the website http://uktribes.com/ I was able to look at what social group or “tribe” would best fit into my target audience and read my magazine.
This is a list of the type of social groups I think would fit into my target audience:
“Emos”: http://uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=9
“Skaters”: http://uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=11
“Scene Kids”: http://uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=10
“Young Alts”: http://uktribes.com/?p=tribe&id=30
However. I also feel that my magazine’s underlying music theme is punk music and therefore the “Punk “social group would also be appropriate to include for my magazine’s target audience. Along with this, these 'tribes' challenge the culturally dominant ideology and as my magazine is doing the same thing then these subcultures would be drawn to my magazine as this is one of the main selling points of my magazine.
To the left is an image that I feel would represent the type of people who would read my magazine. They are wearing “Gallows” t-shirts, but also share some similar aspects of the punk scene such as independency in their appearance, interests, personalities and music taste, again challenging the CDI with the clothing style they have chosen. They all have different hairstyles and variants of tattoos or no tattoos.
The punk brand is hard to appeal to. The aspects are different depending on which "tribe" they belong. Emos wears dark clothing, connoting a rather depressive emotion with black often symbolizing death, with long hair. Whereas punks can range from having short spiked hair to long rugged hair. However, all these social groups are considered to be rebellious (again challenging the CDI) and would like the dark and aggressive look to my magazine.
In relation to the type of clothing that would interest my target audience could be a featured advertisement. For example clothing stores such as http://www.rockcollection.co.uk/ and http://www.thedeadgoodshop.com/ may be shops that could advertise in my magazine. However online websites that supply similar clothing such as http://www.criminaldamage.co.uk/ and http://www.grindstore.com/ would be another good source of advertisement revenue.
The musical interests of my target audience could include a range of music as it is common for social groups to not limit themselves to just one genre and decide to explore other genres of music. For example although my magazine is primarily a punk orientated magazine I could also feature interviews and album reviews of pop punk bands such as New Found Glory or The Wonder Years. Another example of this could be posters of different bands from different genres could include alternative metal bands such as Deftones or even full-on metal bands such as Architects.
Also I must consider the other types of media that my audience may like visual media, these could include films such as The Expendables which features violence and has a mainly male cast, and also comedies such as Superbad given its teen life narrative and the three main characters do not generally fit into the CDI along with the other teenagers at their high school. Another film that could be considered is Sid and Nancy which is a film about the life of the famous bassist of the British punk band "The Sex Pistols". T.V programmes that may interest my target audience include Jackass as it features a group of men performing dangerous stunts to a comedic effect. Also other comedy programmes such as Family Guy or American Dad may also attract my audience through their subversive humour.
