College magazine cover analysis

I chose to analyse the ‘Soup’ college magazine. Whilst looking at the magazine we can see that they have linked the title of the magazine to the image on the front cover which is of a soup can, this could indicate what students would normally eat because they may have no money to be buy better foods or that they lack the skills to cook themselves anything better. Also linking to the food theme the contents that is featured in the magazine is written underneath a title called ‘Ingredients’, this is written in a bright red colour to make it more eye catching and the varying font sizes also make it more interesting. The magazine cover also has a retro theme, this can be seen by looking at the title’s font style which looks as if it could be used in an old arcade game, this again could be because of its target audience and this would be something they would recognise, also this title is in a bold black colour which helps it stand off the page more as it is contrasted by the bright red colours. Also the red ring pattern at the side of the image is in a retro style, this red rings style is almost mirrored on the cooker stove that the soup can is standing on which is also a red ring, this adds comedy to the image and emphasises the lack of money students would have and they cannot afford proper cooking equipment. Another object that is keeping with the retro style is the guitar amp which is placed behind the soup can, this may be linked to what the magazine is primarily related to and it is also used to relate to what college students would be interested in.
