Initial magazine ideas
So far in my ideas for my own magazine I have chosen the tentative title of ‘Unsound’. I want my magazine to focus on punk music from older bands to new bands and also well-known punk bands who are signed to a music label and less known bands who are yet to be signed but are still receiving attention from fans and different media outlets.
While looking at the demographic profile for my magazine I decided to aim my magazine mainly at males, this is because the main gender that reads magazines about aggressive punk bands are males, however I would also like to feature information about punk bands with female leads singers so not to completely alienate the female audience. I have also taken into consideration the age of my target audience, ideally the age I think that would read my magazine would range from 15-25 mainly because from this age a lot of people would still be in education and therefore would hopefully still be interested in music and interested in going to see bands and reading about upcoming gigs and albums and also learning about new bands. Also since the higher age group of 19-25 would either be starting full time work and also some would be heading to university this would help my magazine keep its readers or earn more, this is because if somebody aged 19-25 was starting work they would have more money to be able to afford a magazine such as mine easily, in relation to the people heading to university they would most likely have to get a part time job while at university and would be able to afford my magazine and also both these groups may want to know about upcoming gigs that they can go to or albums they may want to buy which would be featured in my magazine. When looking at the income of my magazine I could not really give an exact figure or estimated figure, mainly because sales could vary depending on if the readers had the money to buy the magazine, bearing in mind that they are teenagers and young adults which although they may have money to spend they do not have a very high income rate (apart from those starting full time work, although these people may still want to spend their money on living essentials rather than a music magazine) and therefore they may buy my magazine once and then not buy the next few issues because of a lack of money. However I feel that if I price my magazine eat around £2-£2.50 it would be low enough that the target audience would be able to buy it and high enough so it would make a profit, also at the moment I would like to release an issue of my magazine either once a month or twice a month which would help people save money to buy the next issue and allow more time to feature more content.
When looking at the content in my magazines I would like to try and feature less known bands on the cover but also link them to a well-known bands, for example if a less known band was supporting a famous band on tour then I would be able to write information about the shows they have played with this famous band and how well they were received. I could then include a gig review about how well the well-known band played and how well the support band played which would then maybe help the reader in the decision on whether to spend their money to go see these bands play live. The gig reviews, however would be solely from the UK (although the bands would not necessarily be English) this is because the readers of my magazine would probably not be interested in gigs that were played in different countries as this is not relevant to where they live and would rather know about the gigs that are available to them. Ideally my feature article would include information about an up and coming band that have received praise on their talent and therefore my target audience would be interested in finding out about this band. Taking in all of the features that my magazine would include I think that my magazine would
